JAW from the sidelines

JAW from the sidelines

Published by Abbie Rayfield on 22nd Oct 2021

My name is Abbie, and I am the second generation of JAW. From a young kid, I have been around JAW and have seen first-hand its many successes. I have always watched and in turn, learned, the ins-and-outs of my family business!

From helping at our original office packing grips and doing small admin jobs, to working at our stalls at numerous Wollongong CrossFit Regionals, to now working full time as the Operations and Admin Manager, I have always been involved in the business in one way or another.

JAW first started out with my mum, Kym Rayfield, sitting at our kitchen table sewing grips for her CrossFit friends. She had originally sewn a pair to protect her own hands from ripping during the intense workouts at CrossFit. One day, I came home from school and the garage had been converted into what was then her new workspace and the office of ‘JAW’.

In year 10, I did my work experience at JAW, which was the first time I ridgy didge, worked in the business. It was completely different to what all my other friends were doing for the week and after hearing their stories and how they despised where they had worked and what they had done for their work experience, I realised just how lucky I was. Although, I still made a point to not want to work in the business after I left school, I wanted something different for my career.

It wasn’t until I was 19, the opportunity was presented for me to become a full time team member at JAW. I began learning the ropes of the daily running of the business as well as enrolling in a Cert 3 in Business Admin to help me along the way. It’s now been 12 months of JAW being my new norm, and I can honestly say that this has been an opportunity to experience what it is like to work in a successful business that stands by its morals and company mission. I have witnessed firsthand what hard work can do for you both personally and socially. It has been and still is an epic experience, one that I am grateful for, to be able to work, watch and learn in a business that is still as successful as it was when it first started.

Watching my parents work hard and grow the business over the last 11 years has been truly inspiring, getting to stand alongside them as they worked countless hours continuously growing and expanding the brand into what it is today. What I have learned along the way is nothing short of special and having had the opportunity to watch how my parents built and established a stable foundation in the CrossFit community, that is a little different today, but still as strong as it was when it first started is something that can’t be taught in a classroom. I am the next generation of JAW, and I am stoked to be able to continue to breathe life and new ideas into the ever-evolving brand! Watch this space…
